Something splendid

Letterpress exhibition flyers including their spelling mistakes... trial and error I guess!

Yafle

Yafle have made some nice exhibition printed materials that I found while researching for the science museum brief I am currently working on. I think the variety of projects shows they work in all sorts of ways within graphic design.

Context publication...

I changed what was suggested in the crit with Lorenzo and have now sent off my book to Lulu, I paid a bit extra for delivery £7 :O so that I could track my order and also it went down to 2 business days instead of 3-5 which is needed concidering the deadline is looming!

I am happy with the work I put into this project and it has definitely helped my own practice, all the advice and opinions gathered from the research were great to take on board and I also made some really nice contacts with really nice people.

Here is the final inner spreads of the book, I thouroughly checked through for mistakes so hope everything is ok now it has gone to print...

Stars - science museum research

Star shapes which might come in use when designing an identity for the Astronomy exhibition...

Cosmology

More research to develop a concept...

Cosmology means the study of the universe.  But one could distinguish between physical Cosmology, the Cosmology of science and physics (e.g. the "Big Bang" Theory of the expanding universe), and metaphyscal or "esoteric' or "occult" Cosmology.  The latter refers not only to the physical universe, but also to all the subtle or non-physical universes as well; the higher realms of existence - psychic, spiritual, and so on - that are beyond the physical

Design for print on a budget

Information on designing for print on a budget. Useful stuff...

ThinkPublic

ThinkPublic - Another agency that focuses on design for the public sector, its nice to find designers who share similar interests in subjects as me to design for, especially when a lot of people say there isn't big money in these sorts of areas of design.

Tentacle

A studio that focuses on design for the public sector. Its not often I have come across studios that dedicate their design skills purely to the public sector as much of the research I have gathered on designing for the public sector has revealed the budgets and pay for projects aren't always big. It is nice to see that it can be done and quite successfully as I can see as I look at Tentacle's work and website.

Design on a budget

Design Sense: Graphic Design on a Limited Budget

by Anastatia R. Miller, Jared Brown

More context research, as Public sector graphics and service graphics don't seem to have big budgets I thought I would start doing some research into how other people approach small budgets projects and still make them successful.

Symbol Sourcebook: An Authoritative Guide to International Graphic Symbols

This is another book I got out of the library for a quick browse, I thought it might come in handy with the logo development I was working on for the information access brief, it was helpful in general really and I made a note and sketch of a few of the symbols for future reference.

Consumer Psychology

Consumer Psychology

by Cathrine V. Jansson-Boyd (Author)

I recently took this book out of the library to get a greater insight into how the audience reacts to design. It was suggested in a crit for my design context that the type of graphic design I am interested in relies on 'getting inside the heads' of people and really connecting with them to spark a reaction from the design message.

So here are some scans of the most relevant information I found relating to my own design practice, they talk about emotions, consumer behavior in general, use of shock tactics, and also work for charities.

It was interesting to look at design from a different point of view as psychologists have studied what we do as designers. I find it fascinating how people can be 'read' and broke down in this way, if it helps me create more successful designs then thats a good thing!!!
